Expectations

Setting Expectations in Network Marketing

Have you ever found yourself frustrated because of the large amount of time and energy you spent bringing someone into your company or opportunity, only to find them leave before they even got started?  This could be because they weren’t given the right expectations up front.

The Wrong Expectations

The great thing about this profession is that it allows anyone, no matter their past experiences, to become an entrepreneur and enjoy the freedom they desire.  It’s very low risk and has a low barrier of entry.  The issue lies in the expectations that most have about our industry and that it is a Get-Rich-Quick business.  That is simply NOT true.  When people are told it’s super easy and they can be making tons of money in virtually no time, it’s simply setting them up with the wrong expectations and they will likely become frustrated and give up before they’re able to see any results.  People are also told if they go out and just talk to a few people a week, they’ll be fine and begin to see their checks growing month after month.  To be under the assumption that you can come in, slap a few posts up on social media or talk to a few friends and all of the sudden you’re going to be making thousands of dollars is simply unrealistic.

The Right Expectations

Network Marketing does actually involve some WORK!  Yes, you will actually have to go out and talk to people!  When I have someone who is wanting to join me, the first thing I now do is ask them a simple question, “Are you easily swayed by the opinions of others?”  If they say no (the majority will) then I go on to say, “Well that’s good because if you ARE easily swayed by the opinions of others, you will have a long road ahead of you.  However, if you’re not, you’ve got a good shot at helping a lot of people and making a lot of money.”  This is a bit of mindset training right off the bat for them and I’m also setting the proper expectations.  Make sense?

expectationsSome things to consider when it comes to expectations….

  • Most of your family and friends will NOT jump on board with you.  A few might, but don’t expect the majority to, it’s unrealistic.
  • Don’t be addicted to the outcome!!  I cannot stress that enough.  If it’s going to upset you if someone tells you NO, then don’t prospect them.  Until you can disconnect yourself from the outcome, it will only cause more frustration.
  • The best in the industry have a close rate of about 30%, 10% is average and if you’re just beginning this might be more around 5%.  That means that the average person will only get about 1 person out of every 10 to say yes.  If you talk to 100 people, on average about 10 will say yes but if you’re just beginning, it may only be around 5 people.  Setting the correct expectations are vital!
  • If you haven’t gained any new business partners or customers, the first thing you need to ask yourself is, “How many peoplesherri brown did I talk to this week?”  If that answer is 3-5 people, well, I’m sorry but that’s simply NOT enough people. A good number is 3-5 people PER DAY that you’re reaching out to!  If you can reach out to more, that will only increase your chances at finding those who need what you’re sharing.
  • Consistency is KEY!!  Consider this…. If you want to lose 20 lbs, do you think that’s going to happen if you’re only going to the gym once or twice a week?  NO!!  So don’t expect your business to grow if you’re only doing something every now and then.
  • If you treat it like a hobby, it will COST you like a hobby! (not sure who said it)

  • BE a student!  Yes, if you want to create success you need to be investing your time (and sometimes money) on developing the skills to become better.
  • Mindset, Mindset, Mindset!!!  A great book on this is called Vibrational Money Immersion by Ray Higdon.   It gave me the breakthrough I needed and completely changed my outlook!
  • Don’t be afraid to fail!! Go For No by Richard Fenton is a Must Read!

Now that you have the proper expectations in place, Go Out There & Crush It!
