I actually learned these steps from one of Jessica Higdon’s courses and once I started implementing it, people became way more receptive. Not to mention, it’s not weird or spammy.
Step #1. Use the person’s name.
Mention their first name when you’re reaching out to them for the first time. Don’t just say, “Hey girl or hey there.” Use their first name because it makes it more personal and people are more receptive and apt to actually read what you wrote.
Step #2. Tell them where you found them.
Take for instance, if you see somebody who made a cool comment on Chalene Johnson’s fan page, you can reach out to them by mentioning where you found them. You can simply say, “Hey Wilma, just wanna send this quick message to you. I saw your commented over on Chalene Johnson’s page and…”
Step #3. Give them a compliment.
Take 30 seconds and go check out their profile. Don’t be too quick to just sit there and reach out to a bunch of people and make it non-personal. Nobody likes that and people’s response will drastically go down. So what you can do is hop onto their profile, find something you like about them and give them a compliment.
Step #4. Always end with a question.
The entire point of your first message is not to pitch them, but to simply make a friend. You also want to keep the conversation going and get them messaging you back.
For instance I can say, “Hey Wilma! I saw your comment on Chalene Johnson’s page and I totally agree with what you said. I checked out your profile and I noticed that you have horses. My little girl loves horses, too. I also noticed you were in West TN. Have you always lived there?”
See? It’s not as complicated as you might think and this approach is not weird!
What Not To Do
The biggest thing you shouldn’t do is try pitching anything in your first message. Your entire goal is to make a friend, build your network and strike up a conversation. If you’re sending pitchy messages, people will ignore you. Remember, nobody cares about your goals or your agenda so stop making it about you and start making it about them!

Love this… So true Sherri!! I am also a recovering spammer.
Nice post, Sherri. That exactly happened to me before. I sent messages to prospects without even telling them how I got their names. No wonder, most of them didn’t respond to me.
It is remarkable to me, Sherri, how effective it is when using someone’s name. In every aspect of life, Sherri. (See what I did there?) 🙂
Thanks for sharing this Sherri. It’s so important to take the extra couple of minutes to make your messages personal, and will go a long way in creating the connections and relationships we’re after
Hey Sherri, I really like your approach to reaching out to your cold market! I love Chalene Johnson!! I got to take a picture with her in Vegas! Thanks again for another awesome post!
Those are some very good points Sherri. I hate it when people reach out to you the first time by copying and pasting some spammy sales message. Very tacky. Thanks for sharing.
Great tips for connecting with my cold market. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome Tips Sherri!
I had more success with interacting with people when using these types of questions.
