When it comes to where you need to build up your fan base, serve your target audience and put out consistent content that’s going to attract people, that would be on a Facebook Fan Page.
I’m not bashing FB Groups at all, but if you’re only using FB Groups to build up your following, you’re going to miss out on a lot. This is for a few different reasons.
THINGS YOU CANNOT DO WITH FB GROUPS
#1 No Analytics
Fan Pages have what’s called an “insights” panel, which gives you a lot of great information about your audience. You’re able to see what percentage is male versus female, the age range, you can also see which posts they are engaging with the most and much more!
Another cool thing I can tell from the “insights” panel is when my audience is online. Therefore, giving me a better idea of the best times to post my content.
#2 It can sometimes take longer to get into them
Many people make their fb group “closed” meaning that people have to request to join. So having to send in the request, then wait for admin approval can sometimes take a while. Unlike a fan page where you can go straight to the newsfeed and consume the content right away.
#3 FB Groups are not searchable on Google.
Every day people are searching google for all kinds of solutions. So if you’re only posting in FB Groups, that’s never going to come up on Google. However, if you are posting on Fan Page, your articles will come up and that can get you more exposure.
#4 FB You can’t schedule things in advance.
With FB Groups, you cannot schedule things in advance (I mean maybe you can with a third party app) but with Fan Page, you can use the built-in scheduler.
5. You can’t run ads or target specific people
You also cannot put any type of call-to-action button up. For instance, on my Fan Page-Sherri Brown Coaching (right below my cover photo), I have the call-to-action button that says “sign up.” When somebody clicks on it, it’s taking them to a free download where they can get on my email list.
Now, there are some instances where I think Facebook Groups do come in handy so be sure to check out the above video to hear those!

Absolutely great points on why a fan page is more important than Facebook groups. Even though you don’t own Facebook, you essentially own your fan page and can control the content delivered there. Whenever I create new contact, I first share to my fan page and then share that update into the group.
Thanks Sherri, definitely looking at building up my fan page! Great tips as usual.
With my Fan page, I like that I can schedule post in advance and I can also boost a post to get more views, or run a targeted Facebook ad. Great info Sherri. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Sherri, definitely some great reasons to opt for a fan page over a group!
Great post Sherri! It was good to hear you break down the benefits vs the limitations for groups. Like you said, there are pluses for having both but when it comes to branding and marketing yourself, nothing beats the Google being able to search for your post! 8)
Excellent points Sherri!
You can’t manage what you can’t measure and that’s the beauty of a FB Fan Page.

Great tips, especially the point that you can get measurable results on a Fan Page. Thank you!
Great tips on why a fan page is better, one of the best points is being able to know more about the analytics. All business owners have to know the numbers
