Tip #1. Make a decision and just start!
While you can grow your fan page without paying for ads (meaning organically) it will take you a lot longer. By just making the decision and running a ‘likes ad’, it allows you to begin pulling in highly targeted people to your fan page, on a daily basis at a much quicker rate.
Tip #2. Target fan pages that have a smaller audience.
This is something I learned when I went through a FB Ads course from Sandi Krakowski. You don’t need to target fan pages with millions of people on their page, although you might think it’s a great idea. Make sure as a small business owner that you’re targeting those fan pages with 500,000 or less people on them.
Tip #3. Think about where your audience is hanging out.
So don’t only think of the exact page where you think you’re audience is hanging out, what other interests do they have? Where do they shop? The best way to discover these pages are to use “Audience Insights” in the ads manager. This tool alone is golden.
A good example of this, is that I’m mentoring a few people with a health and wellness company and therefore you might think to only target fitness pages, but that’s not necessarily the case. These particular ladies are also very big in the rodeo scene and therefore going and looking for those rodeo pages are a great way to get your page in front of your target audience. Make sense?
Tip #4. Don’t use the “Promote Page” Feature.
On your fan page, there’s a button on the left hand side (now underneath your apps) where you can promote your page. I would not recommend you doing it this way but instead, actually go into your ads manager to create the ad. There are more options available there as well.
Tip #5. Use and test out different images
Test out and add different pictures. You can use a combination of stock photos that Facebook gives you, or you can use images of your own. I’ve found that when it’s my own picture, it tends to perform a little better but you can try using a different color background and copy (the words you use on the image or in the description) too.
Tip #6. Only target one fan page at a time.
Target only one fan page at a time (this is SO IMPORTANT) because if you’re targeting multiple fan pages in one ad, you’re not going to know which one is performing the best. If there are two different fan pages I want to target, I will run two separate ads. Then, I’ll see within a couple of days which one is performing better and make some adjustments.

Great post on Facebook ads. I like the tip on not using the “promote page” feature, and just using the ad manager. Why did you recommend that? Just curious….thanks for the value you’re sharing!
Thanks Adewale! When you run a ‘likes ad’ through the ads manager, there are more options available to you versus doing it directly from your fan page. 🙂
These are great tips Sherri! I’m in the process of setting up a “likes” ad and this is very helpful. Thanks for sharing!
This is good stuff. We need to think like “them,” not us. 🙂
