Why Prospecting Can Sometimes Feel Like You’re Chasing a Feral Cat

Alright, do you have this awesome opportunity or product, but people have been running away from you as fast as they possibly can?

When it comes to prospecting, I want to talk about why it can sometimes feel like you’re chasing a feral cat (funny analogy but oh so true so stick with me here, ok?)

Why Prospecting Can Sometimes Feel Like You’re Chasing a Feral Cat

True to Sherri form, I want to share a quick anecdote first. Recently, I was relaxing on our deck with my kid brother and my nephew. All of a sudden, we began to hear a crying cat. Meow! Meow. MEOW!

I couldn’t physically see it, but I knew where it was: under the deck. That’s when I asked the boys to find the poor thing. Very quickly, they spotted this solid black kitten. Slight problem though. The kitty wouldn’t come to them.  As soon as they approached it, it took off like a bolt of lightening was on it’s booty.

The next morning, after I woke up, I strolled outside and stood on our deck again. That’s when I heard the kitten crying once more (and rather loudly). Though it was in need of help, it refused to come to me. He wouldn’t let me get close to him. With that, I grabbed some food and water to bring to him.

Here’s my entire point, the moral of the story!

I see this vulnerable kitten, and I know that there’s coyotes in the woods. There’s no way that he can survive on his own, and I only want to help. But, he sees me as this terrifying thing. THAT’S how prospecting can be.

There are times that you feel as if you’ve got the best product or opportunity in the world.

If they don’t know you or trust you, despite what you have, they’re going to to be less likely to buy from you.

Think back to the terrified kitten under my deck. If I forced myself on him, he would scamper away. It’s the same principle for prospecting.

When I look back at some of the messages I sent people, I noticed how I would go for the kill right away. (total face palm here)

Guess what happened? They exited out of the conversation windows, ignored me, and stopped engaging on my posts.

How do you change that though? Is it possible?

Of course it is, and it’s simple. Rather than focusing on yourself–which is what we often do–you have to switch your mindset and focus on relationship building. After all, your prospects should know you, like you, and trust you (I can’t say that enough).

So, what should I do to gain the skittish kitten’s trust? For the past couple of days, I’ve brought him food and water. Eventually, he’ll associate me with something good. Forcing myself on him won’t work.

Neither will you just messaging people on your list to see if they want to buy your epic product or join your “ground floor” opportunity.

I realize that this may sound like a funny analogy, but in reality, it shares the same principle as prospecting. The people who you want to prospect don’t know who you are or they don’t see the value in what you have to offer (YET).

You may have something wonderful and life altering to share, but as the old saying goes

“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

Focus on your prospects, get to know who they are and what they want, and you’ll eventually find yourself having that conversation with them. Because you’ve gained their trust, you’ll be in the position to share what you have. That’s the key: Building a relationship on trust.

So always remember to be a human first and marketer second (heard this from one of my mentor’s, John Melton).  Now this doesn’t mean that you have to build rapport for ages, but it does mean that you need to actually start asking some questions and getting to know them before you just hit them over the head with what you have.

Now, I’ll also add one final tip and that is to really focus on learning and implementing Attraction Marketing into your business.  When you do this, it’s no longer about chasing, it’s about attracting the right people to you then leading them to a solution that’s going to solve their problem.
