Tips on Social Media Marketing

When it comes to Facebook, have you ever wondered whether or not you should do business on your Personal page or Fan page?  When it comes to Social Media Marketing, I often wondered the exact same thing!

I’ve been diving into a TON of Social Media Marketing lately to uncover which way is the most effective and what I found was actually pretty cool so let’s dive in.

Social Media Marketing:

Person Profile vs. Fan Page

It’s actually against Facebook’s policy to promote your business on your personal page.  Although a ton of people do it, realize that Facebook doesn’t like it and you do run the risk of them shutting down your page.  You may also want to keep in mind that if you’re promoting business on your personal page that you’re going to want to continue to grow your audience.  If you post a lot of personal stuff, are you going to want your fans seeing that or continue to add people that you don’t know?

With a Fan Page/Business Page there are so many things you can do that you simply can’t from your personal page so let’s take a look.

  • If time is limited, you can schedule out posts ahead of time without having to use an outside app.
  • Advertising:  This is a great feature that isn’t available on your personal profile.  You can do paid ads and reach way more people.  You can even narrow down and target specific people based on interests, country, age, etc. which will help you get seen by those most likely to follow you.
  • More professional and allows you to really brand YOU!
  • Call to Action.  This is something really cool Facebook has added which allows you to have a Call to Action button right on your cover photo.  You can send people over to your website, have them contact you, give them free information, invite them to webinars, etc.  Another neat aspect is there are analytics to the right of your cover photo that even tracks how many people have clicked on it.
  • Featured Video:  You can add a featured video to your fan page and have a call to action in it as well.
  • SEO (search engine optimization): I recently discovered that when using key words in your content, this can actually get picked up by google search engines which means more exposure for you.
  • Insights Panel:  I LOVE this feature as I can go in and view how many people have actually seen my posts and how those posts are actually performing.

Overall, when it comes to social media marketing, the benefits of a Fan Page far outweigh that of a Personal Page and it’s a more effective way to track your work through various insights available to you.  I will say that nowadays, on Facebook, it’s a pay to play environment.  If you want your content to get viewed, without ads, its not going to happen near as fast.  I was doing a training last night and learned that when it comes to Facebook Marketing, your fans will only see approx. 9-25% of your posts organically (meaning they will see it without paying to boost it).  That isn’t a high percentage folks.  However, there are some ways to increase engagement (whether or fan page or personal page) so take a look at the infographic below.

  1. Brilliant post Sherri. I use my fan page mostly and personal profile for connecting with people and sharing some of my fan page content. I DID NOT KNOW about those conversion and engagement tips, definitely gonna start using some of those right away. Thanks for sharing.
