The first step to marketing online

The First Step to Marketing Online

Does the whole “coming online and trying to learn this whole marketing and branding” confuse you and make you feel a little bit overwhelmed?

If so, believe me when I say, I get it!  I used to think building an online business would be super easy given the fact that I not only have my MBA but I was also in wireless sales for many years before deciding to become an entrepreneur.

To be honest, I thought it would be pretty easy but boy was I mistaken.  I struggled for four years and it all came down to the fact that I never took the time to learn ACTUAL MARKETING!  However, given the right training, it doesn’t have to be complicated at all.  You just need to know the right steps to start attracting your ideal customers and clients.

The First Step to Marketing Online

The very first step when it comes to marketing online is to really think about and define your brand. What I mean by brand is you have to really hone in and decide on who you want to be known as.

Do you want to be known as the skincare guru?  The health & wellness gal who helps empty nesters?  The marketing and branding go to person?  The tech ninja?

Here’s the deal, the big mistake that people make (and I also did it for many years so I’m not judging) is they join a network marketing company and all of the sudden they start posting anything and everything about that particular company and how awesome the products are and the opportunity.  Am I right?

If that’s what you’re doing, chances are you are repelling way more people than you are attracting. I can promise you that because I was like the prime example of repellant marketing.

So when it comes to your brand, know exactly what you want to be known as. When people say your name, what do you want them to think of? You don’t want them to think, “Oh gosh, they’re just with this company and trying to pitch and sell me something” but unfortunately, that’s what the majority of newbies do and it doesn’t work!  Not if you expect to create anytime of actual success online.

Now for me, I’m a stay-at-home mom. I didn’t have a large receptive warm market so I had to get creative when it came to building a business online. Also, I’m not one to go out and build a business belly-to- belly. It’s just not my style. Does it work?  Absolutely!  However, it’s just not something I personally wanted to do.

So when it comes to my personal brand, when someone says “Sherri Brown,” I want them to think of marketing and branding and how I not only help people stand out online, but also how to create leverage and work smarter, not harder!  Therefore, much of my content is around those topics.

Now, grab and pen and paper and ask yourself what you want your brand to be.  Again, do you want to be known as the skincare guru? Do you want to be known as someone who empowers women to create the life and the freedom that they deserve and get out of the 9 to 5 rat race? Do you want to be known as the makeup and beauty expert?

Here’s the deal, when it comes to building a thriving business online, you must understand that people join people. Also, don’t get hung up in the fact that there are tons of others out there doing the same thing you want to do.  There are a lot of people out there who teach exactly what I teach. There are tons of people out there who teach people about marketing and branding but that doesn’t stop me from impacting as many people and lives and I can so never let it stop you!

As a reminder, don’t join a company and think that your brand is the company that you’re with because it’s not.

Your brand and your business is you. The company and the products that you have, the service, the opportunity—those are just back end offers based on somebody’s need, but that’s not your business. People join people and people do business with people they know, like and trust. Therefore, you must become that brand that people know, like and trust.

  1. Great post – branding really does need to be done up front! I resonated with your comment about being educated and because of that, thinking it would be “easy.” LOL Still need to put in the work and be educated on how to do it. Great post to show that – thanks, Sherri!

  2. We’ve all made that first mistake because it’s what the company training tells you to do & you soon join the “NFL”….No Friends Left.
Branding yourself is an absolute must.

  3. True, people join people, not companies. I believe when Network Marketers decide to brand their company and not themselves; its because they want to take the easy road. You said it right, You had to get creative. This is what those lazy Network Marketers don’t want to do, they don’t want to use creativity. In long run, they will never see their business grow.

  4. Absolutely right…it’s our own effort to create a brand for ourselves and not for the company we’re working with. Mentioning about the company’s name makes them great but won’t even help build our own identity and brand as an entrepreneur.

  5. So true Sherri I did the same mistake and was left with a super burnt warm marketing. Think most marketers miss the boat on this one but would be so many steps ahead if they began branding themselves. Great share

  6. Love this post … for years I struggled with what the company said and what I saw big companies doing.
I look at Coke … they make everything about fun and refreshing, no matter how much research is done against it. Coke is all about fun and people have to start putting them first when marketing.

  7. I love how you mentioned personal branding. In my opinion, the greatest asset we have in your business is not your list, not your website/blog, but YOU!

When you know who you are, what you stand for, who you’re serving, and how you will serve them, you’ll have more leads than you know what to do with!
