The Big 3: How To Stay Focused and Get Things Done

Do you ever feel like you just aren’t getting the results that you want in your business?  Maybe you’re super busy all day but not necessarily productive.  Trust me, I totally get!!  I felt that way for a long time which is exactly why I wanted to share something I learned from Chalene Johnson.

I was listening to an episode on her podcast about “The BIG 3” which is all about how to stay focused and get things done.

The Big 3: How To Stay Focused and Get Things Done

#1 Consume it.

This is where you are listening to personal development which could be a webinar training, podcast, video, blog post, etc and you are consuming content.  Most people consume content on a daily or weekly basis and that’s great!  However, if you aren’t doing the other two steps, you are wasting your time!  This is where most entrepreneurs go wrong and wonder why they aren’t getting or seeing many results in their businesses.  Let’s move on to step 2.

#2 Learn it.

The second part is to actually Learn the information you just consumed.  Keep in mind that if you can’t fully explain what you just consumed then you didn’t learn it.  I’ll give you an example.

I was going through one of Chalene Johnson’s academies recently (Virtual Business Academy which is all about outsourcing and learning to work smarter and not harder). Well, part of what she was talking about was different places that you can go to actually hire virtual assistants. There are places like Upwork.com, Virtualstafffinder.com, Onlinejobs.com (where I hired my two most recent assistants) and lots of other places. Onlinejobs.com is a Filipino-based company where you can hire virtual staff from the Philippines but I wasn’t really familiar with this website.

And so how did I learn it? I actually went to the website and I started going through it, I started watching videos and getting a feel for how they worked. I was learning how the pay goes and what kind of tests and things they put their VA’s through, etc.

So, I learned how this website worked by actually diving into it.  Make sense?  Now… let’s move on to the third part.

#3 Implement it.

Now the third step is to actually implement.  This again is where many miss the boat!  You can consume and learn all day but if you aren’t actually implementing what you’re learning, there’s no point.

Let’s go back to my example with the course I went through.  I consumed the information by listening to each module and lesson.  I then learned it by actually going to the website and getting a feel for it.  I implemented what I learned by actually posting a job on that website and went through the entire process until I hired two new VA’s.  Make sense?

An example where I consumed information but didn’t learn or implement.

Now, I’m going to give you another example of going through this academy where I actually consumed it but didn’t really learn or implement it.

So part of outsourcing is having a way or a platform where you can communicate with your virtual staff.

One of the websites that was mentioned in the Academy was called “Trello”. This website is basically where you can sit and communicate back and forth with different teams.

So I consumed it and heard talk about it, but I did not take the time to go and download or really learn how it worked.

Do you see the difference there? So it’s very important, if you want to stay focused and you want to get results, to not only consume information but to also schedule out time to where you actually learn it and then you implement it into your business.

Remember that if you’re not getting results, chances are you aren’t doing the second two parts, which are crucial.

  1. Very good tips. Most times when I didn’t get the results or fell short at something I realize I was missing at least one of these elements. I struggle with focus!!

  2. Love this post Sherri! We have to consume and learn whatever medium it is we are learning and building from! Then must take that and take action by like you said implementing it our lives and business. Thanks for another excellent share!
