Take Control of Your Schedule With Reverse Engineering

How to control your schedule with reverse engineering

Today, I’m going to be teaching you how to take control of your schedule with reverse engineering.

I don’t know about you, but do you ever feel like you start your day and you really don’t know what you need to be doing?  I mean, you know that you’ve got to be doing stuff for your business but maybe you have a hard time squeezing it all in?

If so, this post is really going to help.  Now, this is a concept I learned from Chalene Johnson when I was going through one of her courses and I had to share!

Take Control of Your Schedule With Reverse Engineering

Now, as an entrepreneur, there are 5 things that you need to be doing daily in regards to your business.  So, I’m just going to recap those real quick:

  • Personal development. This could be listening to a podcast, reading a book, going through a webinar or course, attending events, training calls, etc.  I would recommend at least 30 minutes a day and I would focus on an area where you need help.  For example, if you don’t know anything about marketing and branding or how to use attraction marketing to generate leads on social media, then taking some time to get better in that area will cut your learning curve so you can get into profit quicker. Make sense?
  • Implementing what you learned.  This is where most miss the boat!  See, if you’re spending tons of time going through training but you aren’t scheduling time to actually put into action what you learned, you’re really wasting time and money.
  • Admin activities.  This could be pulling reports, checking and responding to emails, organizing your office, checking in with your team, etc.
  • Content creation.  If you want to generate leads and get people reaching out to you, creating content is a must!  This is something you should be doing on a daily basis but just be sure your content is either Entertaining, Educating, or Inspiring your target audience.
  • Prospecting and building relationships. In order to grow your business, you absolutely have to be growing your audience and building relationships constantly!  If you don’t have eyeballs, you’ll never go anywhere.

Now, if you want to go a step further, you can even implement time to engage and comment on other people’s posts/pages which is always a great idea and definitely something I would recommend.

Alright, let’s talk about how to reverse engineer your day!

Each day, well… specifically the night before, I schedule out my entire day in 30-minute blocks.  The first thing that I put down are my non-negotiables. If you have kids and you take them to school, obviously that’s non-negotiable, so you put that down first.

This could also be appointments, work, etc.

Back when I shot this video, my schedule was a little different than what it is now but this is still a great example of how I do it. If you want to see how I break this down, be sure to check out the video.

Activity Schedule

6:30 7:00 Blog content – Mondays are a blog day for me and because my little girl loves to sleep in a little bit, usually what I do is I get up at 6:30 am.
7:00 8:00 Prospecting – What I do is I go ahead, reach out to people, check messages, do a little admin activities usually 7:00 to 8:00
8:00 9:00 Personal Development – If Maddie is still asleep, then I can put in some personal development.
9:00 12:00 Maddie’s time – This is where we make breakfast, eat, take a shower and get ready.
12:00 1:30 Lunch time
1:30 2:30 Coaching call
2:30 5:00 Webinar
5:00 5:30 Another coaching call
5:30 6:30 Make dinner
6:30 7:00 What I can do is I can go back and do some more prospecting, do a post of Facebook, etc.
7:00 Then at seven I can do some admin stuff – so I can check my emails, etc.

Then what I do at the end of this is turn around and start writing out what I’m going to do Tuesday morning.

Reverse engineering your day

Start with your non-negotiables and then look at the things you need to be doing in your business every day. Once that’s done, you can go back in and see where you can put those activities on your calendar.

Since I’ve been doing this, it has really allowed me to take control all of my day and not feel like I’ve been busy but unproductive which I’m sure you can relate. 🙂

Shut off all distractions

This is one of the biggest tips of all when it comes to productivity.  I mean, think about it.  How many times have you sit down to do something and then you get distracted by your phone dinging (facebook notification, email received, text message, updates available, etc.)

Therefore, when it comes to waking up and getting my blog posts done, what I do is I shut off all distractions…. I close down Facebook, I mute my phone, put the dogs out (mine are worse than my toddler so I let them out to play, lol), I close down all other tabs and by doing that, it allows me to completely focus on the task at hand and I’m able to do it much quicker!

Another tip (in case you struggle with time getting away from you) is to get a kitchen timer or set a timer on your phone.  That way you can race against the clock and only spend the allotted amount of time on each task before moving on to the next.

Take personal development for example…. I am a PD junkie!  I could sit and listen to training after training and no joke, look up and 4 hours have gone by! lol  However, I have to limit my time to ensure that I stay on track and bust through my to-do list each day.

That’s a great schedule. A lot of people still work full time, like I do, and do the business part time.
I’d appreciate it if you could give me a rough plan based on your video. Organising time to the get the best value is a tough one for me.
    Great value here…awesome.

If you work full time, map that out. Then think about lunch time. Do you get a full hour? If so, eat within 30 minutes and schedule some work time in for the remainder. How far is your commute? Maybe schedule in that time for personal development. 🙂 Hope this helps

Great ideas Sherri especially with it comes to children and their schedules, taking them to school is definitely non-negotiable times

  • Loved this post! I have been a big fan of reverse engineering my day – I learned that from Tony Robbins…

Schedule your non-negotiables first and then work around those. I get more done in less time and achieve more balance

You said a mouthful with “Prospecting and building relationships”.

    That is MAJOR!

So many times people get started in marketing themselves and totally
neglect to reach out and meet new people.

Thanks for such great content as always Sherri.
