The Pro’s and Con’s of Network Marketing and Home Based Business Ownership

The biggest pro to starting your own home based business is the fact that it’s so low entry and low risk.  With that being said, I would also argue that it’s the con to this industry as well.  The fact that it’s so easy to get into is not always a great thing.  

Imagine what it would take financially to start your own brick and mortar store.  You not only have the monthly rent and utilities but you also have all that overhead.  Having a store front is out of the question for most people which is what makes network marketing a viable option.  You don’t have to worry about credit checks and bank approval, nor do you have to worry about staffing or stocking the store, etc.  

However, those who own traditional store fronts realize that they won’t get their money back overnight and that they had to invest money in order to make a profit down the road.  They also aren’t so quick to give up if they aren’t rich within a few months.  See, when people have more invested, they are more serious and less apt to throw their hands up and walk away.  

The big con to the home business industry is the amount of people who say they are “serious” about their business yet not willing to invest any time (and rarely money) to even learn the skills to become successful in the first place.  I can also guarantee if you had more invested, there wouldn’t be near as many excuses and you’d likely take your business more serious.

So, the biggest investment you can make, as an entrepreneur, is in YOURSELF!  You’ve got to believe that the money you put in and invest in yourself is going to yield you a bigger return.

You also need to realize that you are going to attract who you are, not what you want.  If you are someone who is always seeking free, you never invest your time or money to learn skills, then know that you in turn attract people who just want something for free.

If you want to attract people into your business that are going to be hard working, they are going to see investing in themselves as an asset and not something that’s going to hurt them, and someone who is positive.  If you want to attract those type of people, then you need to become that type of person yourself.

Free Is Your Most Expensive Option

I was listening to Ray Higdon talk a while back and this was the topic and I thought more people needed to hear it.  

You must realize that Time is money!  That’s one of the reasons, a big reason that I started really investing in myself. Last year, I spent quite a bit of money working with an accountability coach for six weeks. Now, why did I invest a lot of money into that? It was because I wanted to cut my learning curve. I knew that in order to get to where I wanted to go and cut my time that investing in myself would get me there a lot faster.  That’s why I’m always investing in courses, training, and my goal is to join a mastermind next year that is over $20K.   

Yes, I create a lot of videos and blog posts giving tips on specific topics but I don’t have enough time to dive super deep on any one topic.  However, there are courses and training systems that you can plug into that WILL!

Now, I’m not saying to go out there and spend thousands and thousands of dollars but simply forego the coffee and get a book, or instead of listening to music while you’re in the car, listen to a podcast and learn something.  YOU ARE WORTH THE INVESTMENT!

  2. You stated it exactly, Sherri. As entrepreneurs, the biggest investment we can make is not on our products or services, but in ourselves. We’ve got to engage on something that will make us better, more experienced and, of course, the authority of our business. Thank you for your tips.

  3. It never ceases to amaze me how people won’t invest. Sherri, TRUE STORY- I was getting started in Network Marketing. I told a friend. They wanted to support me and were prepared to go to the bank, take out THOUSANDS of dollars to help me. I told them, “no, all I need you to do is get this supplement and talk to people. It’s like $100” They looked at me like I was crazy and weren’t willing too! I’ll never understand how people put a price on their time, freedom, and life…anyways, awesome content as always!
