Marketing Tips: The First 4 Steps to Creating a Thriving Business & Brand Online

Today, I’m discussing Marketing Tips: The First 4 Steps to Creating a Thriving Business & Brand Online

I’ve been coaching and mentoring someone in the beauty industry and she reached out to me with a problem that she’s been facing: She struggles to come up with content. It’s a common issue, right?

With that, I was inspired to share the process that I took her through during our talk.

And without the understanding the first 3 steps, I find that creating content can and will be more difficult.

Also, I’ll be diving more into this topic inside of my Free FB Mastermind Group so if you aren’t a part of it, you can gain access HERE!

Step #1 – What is your brand?

The first question I asked her was “What is your brand?”  That’s when she gave me her company’s name.

I want each of you, especially if you’re in network marketing, to understand that your brand is YOU.

Ask yourself “What do I want people to think about when they hear or see my name?” What do you want to be known for? Whether you realize it or not, everybody has a brand.

I’m going to give you a few examples.

  • ESPN – Its brand is SPORTS, so it naturally appeals to sports enthusiasts.
  • Cartoon Network – When you hear this name, you know that the focus is towards kids and cartoons.
  • Amy Porterfield – For those of you who are in the online business realm, think about Amy Porterfield.  “Amy’s” brand is focused around list building, webinars, and course creation.
  • Danette May – May is a fitness giant with a massive social media following. When you hear her name, you know what she’s all about.
  • Mari Smith – She is very well-known as a Facebook expert (they even hired her).

As far as my name goes, when you hear “Sherri Brown”, you may associate me with social media marketing and branding—mainly Facebook. I’m big into videos, and I love doing Facebook lives. I’m also knowledgeable when it comes to outsourcing and teaching people how to leverage their time. My motto is “Work smarter, not harder.”

For you, it could be something totally different.  You could be known as the: Skin care guru, beauty expert, the health and wellness person, or the travel guide. You want people to think of you, and you want them to reach out to you for your particular genius.

I want to encourage all of you to read a book called Magnetic Sponsoring by Mike Dillard. This is a fantastic resource on attraction marketing and it’s a quick but super powerful read.

Ok, so before we dive into the second tip, I’ve got a free resource for you.  It’s my Ultimate Guide to Magnetically Attract Your Ideal Prospect Using the Latest Social Media Strategies.  You can grab it HERE.

Inside, I also share with you how to setup your profile so that it’s not repelling people as soon as they see it (I totally wish I had this when I first got started).

Now, let’s move on to the next step. 🙂

Step #2 – Who is your target market?

Once your brand’s in place, the second thing that you want to establish is your target market. Ask yourself who your ideal customer is (or client or business partner). Who is the ideal person that you want to work with?

Here are some questions that you should ask yourself when you’re identifying your target market:

  • What qualities do they have?
  • Where do they live?
  • What’s their age range?
  • Are they male?
  • Are they female?
  • What are their problems?
  • What are their struggles?

One of the biggest reasons why many won’t earn a cent online is that they don’t understand who their target market is, nor do they know how to market.

This is a part of your foundation, and if you don’t have a foundation, it’s hard to create any type of long lasting and sustainable business.

Remember this: When you try to attract everybody, you often end up attracting nobody.

You have to get specific when it comes to your target market.

Step #3– How are you’re going to market?

The third thing you should do, is to plan how you’ll market.  Take a look at your business model—what do you see?

As you know, Facebook is my jam.  I’m not trying to master every social media platform out there and you shouldn’t either.  This was a big mistake I made early on and it cost me a ton of time and money.

When it comes to social media, pick one and get really serious about learning the ins and outs.  The worst thing you could do is to aim for all social media platforms because they each speak a different language. What is acceptable on one is not acceptable on the other.

This is why you should narrow it down and decide which platform to use. How are you going to get your message out there? Is it going to be through video? Are you going to set up a website or a blog? Will you primarily do a podcast, etc?

Once you figure this out, I’d like to welcome you to the fourth step!

Step #4 – Creating valuable content that’s going to solve a pain or problem.

Here’s the biggest tip I can give you: Stay consistent with providing content.

With content creation, remember that your job is to create valuable content that will solve people’s problems.  Specifically keeping your “ideal customer” in mind.

When you do this, you’ll not only attract people, you’ll also build the “know,” the “like,” and the “trust factor.”

Without that know, like, and trust, you’re not going to build rapport with your prospects and without this, they’re a lot less likely to ever buy from you.

The very best thing that you can do is to become a person of value. You do this by educating yourself & your audience, and doing it on a daily basis.

If you’re with a network marketing company, go to your back office and go through the training—and reteach that training.

Back when I was spamming, I noticed Ray Higdon. Soon, I did a 360 thanks to his ILT method. That’s where you invest your time to learn something and then teach it!

That’s when I personally began to go through trainings, webinars, read books, attended events and I simply shared some of the best tips.

Before I knew it, people began to ask me questions. And if I didn’t know the answer, I would research it.  You can do the same!

Here’s some Ray Higdon gold..

All of that knowledge is un-cashed checks for you.  So the more that you can teach, the more valuable you become in the eyes of your prospects.

In short, be a consistent person of value. Don’t just pitch. Put yourself in the shoes of your prospects. They love to buy—but they don’t love to be sold to.

They’re not going to care how awesome your product is nor will they care about your goals BUT they DO care about finding a solution to whatever problem they have.

Was this helpful?  Is there anyone else you know that is struggling in this area and could use some pointers too, share this with them so they too can increase their sales. I promise, they’ll thank you for it.

  1. This post was very good Sherri, I agree, you have to know your brand and who you are trying to attract. I’ve talked to so many people and you ask them who do they want to attract to their business and they say everybody! Big mistake!

Get clear on who your target audience is and the content creation will come a lot clearer.

    Awesome training thanks!

  2. I’ve been online for 10 years & I used to lead with my business until I found out that it’s not the way to do it. Even now we still see maybe up to 90% of people online leading with their business. Great video as always Sherri.
