Today I’ll be sharing the big differences between a Facebook fan page versus profile.

Feel free to share this with anyone on your team who might be asking themselves the same question.

Facebook Fan Page Versus Profile

PROS on Personal Profile

There’s actually a big perk when you’re doing anything from your profile:

  • In the beginning you’re going to get a lot more engagement and more organic (without paying for ads) reach by posting from your Personal Profile.
  • When you put up a post on your Personal Profile, it’s actually eight times more likely to show up in the news feed (as of now but this could change down the road as fb’s algorithm changes).

However, I will tell you that organic reach has been down all across the board and you have to think why… Mark Zuckerberg actually posted that Facebook now has 1.8 billion people using their platform. So when you think about that, now more than ever, COMPETITION is crazy to get into the news feed.

CONS on Personal Profile

  • In case you do not know this little fact, it is actually against Facebook’s policies and procedures for you to be building a business solely from your Personal Profile.
  • Realize that on your Personal Profile, you’re capped to a certain number of people also, which means, you can’t have any more than 5,000 friends.

What happens when you put up a post from your profile?

  • You will not know how much reach that post got (meaning how many people actually saw the post in their newsfeed).
  • You will not know any other analytics.

PROS on Fan Page

Now here are some cool tips about Fan Page

  • You have an insights panel on your Fan Page which gives you tons of analytics, all about people who are coming to your page (age ranges, where they live, what hours they’re on, and sooo much more).
  • You can have as many people on your Fan Page as you want.
  • You can also run Facebook ads.
  • You can really build a highly targeted following who has an interest in what you’re talking about.

CONS of Fan Page

  • The biggest con of Fan Page is — it takes time and it can be “pay to play” so to speak.
  • Your post is less likely to get in the news feed of more people in the beginning as you’re building your Fan Page.
  • You should be patient, committed and consistent, although most people are not and I struggled with this aspect if I’m being completely honest.

Bonus Tip

Lastly, I’m going to give you a little bonus tip… when putting up your post on both Personal Profile and Fan Page:

  • Be sure that all of your posts are not just you sharing somebody else’s content.  So, the majority of the stuff that’s going on your Personal Profile or your Fan Page should be content posted from you.  I’d say at least 70-80% at least.

I’ll be hosting two webinars (today and Monday) on what I did that allowed me to quadruple my annual income in one year and how you can do it too.  If you want check it out, you can register and grab all the details here!

  1. Thanks for pointing out the distinctions – I knew some, but not all of the information. I haven’t thought of it too much, but great tip to be posting YOUR own material! Thanks, Sherri!

  2. Excellent post! I can fully back you on the “pay to play!”
My fan page is finally getting momentum! I never put biz stuff on my profile page.
I only share Personal Development lives. SO its been a slow build, but honestly SO worth it for the quality of people who are coming through now.

    Great post Sherri! Thanks!

  3. Sherri,
I love your helpful tips and your webinar today was very inciteful! Rome wasn’t built in a day. Put in consistent, focused effort over time and results will come!

  4. I’ve had a fan page for a while now & you’re exactly right Sherri it takes time. Now I’m seeing more reach with the content I’m posting. Thanks for sharing

  5. Hello!

I have been searching for stats on how many people actually see your Facebook post from a personal profile. You say 8x as many. If you are using the post that Facebook corporate published back in 2013, stating that 16% of your page’s followers will see your post, then you estimate that, well the math is 128% of people will see your post. Or 100% of your friends will see it 1x and then 28% will see it again.

Can you tell me where you got that information? I’ve been looking everywhere for it.
