7 Tips for MLM Prospecting

Ever joined a company and then panicked because you had no idea how to Prospect?  This is the area where Network Marketers can improve the most.

Prospecting

When it comes to prospecting, it is the absolute most important part of your business and where most of your time should be spent.  This is definitely true in the beginning stages when you don’t have tons of leads coming in. There are two types of prospecting and each have their advantages/disadvantages.

Warm Market Prospecting:

Advantages:  These are people that know you (family, friends, acquaintances) so it’s typically the fastest, easiest, most proven way to prospect.

Disadvantages:  People are generally addicted to the outcome, meaning, if someone tells them “No” or ignores them, they take it to heart and get upset.  Often times, people are too selfish to prospect their family and friends because they are too focused on what people might think of them versus how you can help them.

Cold Market Prospecting:

Advantages:  Endless supply of prospects!!  There will always be more people you don’t know than you do.  It’s typically a little easier because if we’re ignored by people we don’t know, we don’t get as emotional.

Disadvantages:  They typically have the highest level of skepticism, they are pitched opportunities often and generally they have something to pitch themselves.  It can also take longer to close them.

Now let’s get into the meat of Prospecting, shall we?

7 Tips for MLM Prospecting

  1. The #1 goal is to find out if they are OPEN to learning or hearing more.  Also, use the word “open” and not “interested” and you’ll see a bigger percentage of those who will respond.  If someone IS open to learning more, don’t do all of the talking by vomiting all over them about your opportunity.  Instead, use a tool that will do the work for you whether it be a video, conference call, PowerPoint presentation, etc.  When you’re the one doing all of the talking, this is NOT duplicable!  You want to make sure that they too can see themselves doing it.
  2.  Ask questions but do more listening and not so much talking!
  3. The point of asking questions to is uncover THEIR NEEDS!  This is where most people go wrong, they are more focused on themselves and what someone can do for them instead of focusing on the needs of their prospects!
  4. Never ever ever ever ever send an unsolicited link!!  I’ve done it in the past and I learned really quick it is something you don’t want to do!  An unsolicited link is where you send someone an initial message and slap your company presentation in there or your website without talking to them first.
  5. When prospecting, don’t try and convince anyone, EVER!  This just makes you look desperate.  Remember that the majority of the people you talk to are not going to join your business or become a customer.  Again, you’re looking for people who are OPEN!
  6. If someone says they aren’t interested or that it’s a pyramid scheme (gotta love that one, right?), don’t become Defensive!  Just move on….NEXT!!
  7. Maintain your POSTURE!!  This is something else I’ve recently learned.  We know as Network Marketers that it’s the better way for the average person who has an entrepreneurial spirit but not everyone will understand this or care to.  For more on posture, Check out Ray Higdon’s blog and video here!

  1. I really appreciated these tips for MLM prospecting. It makes sense to ask questions, but to also do a lot more listening. In my opinion, the ability to listen carefully is one of the most valuable skills a person can possess. Thanks for sharing this.
