6 video marketing tips

6 FB Live Tips to Help You Crush It Online

If you’re building a business online, hopefully one of your strategies includes you doing videos!  If not, I definitely recommend you taking the plunge as it’s definitely what’s getting all the attention.

With that being said, I get a lot of questions around video in general and therefore I wanted to give you 6 FB Live tips to help you crush it online so that you’re actually standing out.

6 Video Marketing Tips to Help You Crush It Online

Now, before I get into those 6 tips, I had someone ask me recently if it’s ok to post YouTube videos to Facebook and if it was just as good as posting and uploading a video natively.

Let me just say this… in case you don’t know: YouTube is not exactly best friends with Facebook and for obvious reasons… they are big competitors of each other. So, if you are posting a YouTube video on your Fan Page, your profile, or anywhere else on FB, know that your organic reach (how many people it reaches without having to pay for ads) is going to be drastically lower than it would had you uploaded that video natively.  So when it comes to FB videos, I always recommend you just uploading that video directly to the platform.

Now… there are 3 different types of videos that you can put on Facebook and each of them carries a different weight in regards to organic reach so pay attention.

#1 Facebook lives

If you are doing a FB live, Facebook is going to give you and your video a higher bump and preference in the news feed. Not to mention, they now have a dedicated news feed just for live videos. So if you’re looking to get your name out there and you want more views then this is the #1 most powerful way to do it.

#2 Pre-recorded videos

If the thought of going live scares you a little, the next option is whipping out your phone or even doing a screenflow (recording your screen) and uploading it.  This is popular only because if you make any mistakes, you just easily edit the video before anyone sees it.

Now, you are still going to have an advantage by posting pre-recorded videos than you would if you just posted an image or blog post, but not as much as a Facebook live.

#3 YouTube videos

The third type is uploading outside videos such as YouTube, but your reach will be MUCH LOWER on Facebook. Remember that there’s an order of importance on how they push that out in people’s news feed.  Now that you know this, let’s move on to 6 tips!

6 tips to help you stand out when it comes to videos

1. Shoot your videos horizontally and not vertically.

When you’re doing videos, I definitely recommend shooting horizontally (or sideways). When you’re shooting videos vertically, what happens is that there’s black space around the videos but if you turn them sideways, your video fills the entire screen.

2. Don’t tell people how nervous you are.

When you’re going live, don’t tell people that you’re “so nervous because this is your first Facebook live… etc”. That makes everybody else know that you’ve never done videos before and they may start to feel nervous, too. Instead, just share your message and if you mess up, it’s OK!!  Just remember that the more you do it, the more relaxed you’ll be and the better you’ll become.

3. Don’t wait for viewers to get on.

When it comes to videos, keep in mind you only have around 8 seconds to capture someone’s attention before they decide whether they’ll continue watching you or move on to something else. Also, the vast majority of your views are going to be people watching the replay. So, get straight to the content!

4. Look at the camera dot, NOT yourself.

When you’re creating a video, look at your cellphone’s camera dot and stop looking at yourself. When you are looking at the dot, to those viewing the video, it looks like you’re looking them straight in the eye versus appearing as if you’re looking off to the side. I mean think about it…. when you are watching someone on camera and they are looking at you, doesn’t it build a deeper connection with you?  Of course it does!

5. Prepare your content.

It’s always a good idea to take a few notes before hopping on (even if it just a few bullet points).  This will allow you stay on track and keep your thoughts together versus just trying to wing it all the time.  Now, if you feel you do better on the fly, then don’t let me stop you!  However, I know for me, it allows me to stay on track and ensure that I don’t leave out any important information that I want to share.

6. Don’t focus on the number of viewers.

Don’t ever get nervous when you see how many people are watching you live? Listen, I’ve heard it over and over again from students and clients talking about how seeing the number of viewers drop just bums them out.

When you’re focusing on that number and it begins to drop, it becomes an emotional roller coaster to you.  Am I right? That can then get into your head and mess with you mentally which can also throw you completely off from the message you wanted to share.  And… if you still can’t stop, then take a piece of small tape and put it over where that number appears so you can’t see (this is a cool little hack one of our members posted in our private fb group and I just loved it).
