5 Ways To Keep You More Cyber Secure

So here’s the deal. I have been kicking and screaming going through this new training and also taking the time to get all of this setup. Mainly because it’s just something I have been clueless about in the past but it’s absolutely an important process that you should have in place. Even if you’re not growing a business, you need to make sure that you are secure.

1.  Update all your apps, programs, operating system and everything.

The first thing you can do is to make sure that all your apps, programs, operating system and everything are up-to-date. Because what I’ve learned is, a lot about those “bug fixes” are actually for security reasons.

2.  Use a password manager.

Second thing you could do is to use a password manager.  There are many out there but the one I use is “1Password.” You can have all of your passwords in one place and if you have a virtual team, you can also create different “vaults” that you share with each of them.

3.  Use a two-factor authentication.

The third thing that you can do to make you more secure is to use two-factor authentication. So, take for instance, if you log in to Facebook and you have a two-factor authentication set up, what happens is you can log in but then Facebook could generate a passcode that’s then sent to your cell phone. That generated code you would then enter in as a second layer of security. Some of the different places that you can have two-factor authentication are Dropbox, Facebook, Pinterest, Google+, Twitter, and YouTube.

4.  Set a password on your phone.

The fourth tip is to set a password on your phone. So for me, before I can even get in and access anything on my phone, I have to enter a four-digit code. Yes, an extra step can be a little bit annoying but it’s a lot less annoying if someone saw my phone and they couldn’t get in and access all of my stuff. Better safe than sorry!

5.  Use a messaging app that supports encryption.

So the fifth and final tip is to use a messaging app that supports encryption. If you have an iPhone and you send a text message to somebody and the text message shows up in blue, that means the message is encrypted AKA meaning it’s secure. On the other hand, if you send a text message on iPhone and it shows up in green that means it’s just a regular SMS text message and it’s not as secure.

If you have an Android, iOS, Windows or Blackberry, you can also use “WhatsApp” which offers encryption. If you have an iOS or an Android, there’s another app called “Signal” that you can download as well.

Never thought about the app updates as security updates, Thanks for the heads up!

  2. Thanks for all these useful tips! I was actually been hacked before and it’s really frustrating! I don’t ever want it to happen again so I’m always in the lookout for new ways to secure my privacy online.

  3. Great tips Sherri. Most of these I use already. My password manager is a lifesaver- one less thing for me to remember. I’ve added the two factor authentication to several of my log-ins. Thanks for sharing!
