5 Big Marketing Mistakes Entrepreneurs Make on Social Media

Many new entrepreneurs (and even a lot who have been at it a while) are not doing effective marketing on social media, particularly Facebook, because they’re not educated on how to successfully go about it.  And, whether you’re new or not, knowing the biggest online marketing mistakes can help you avoid the pitfalls. 

Trust me, as someone who calls themselves a #RecoveringSpammer, I’ve made them all! (just keeping it real) and that’s exactly why I didn’t make any money and I had people practically running the opposite direction for about 4 years (you would think I’d have learned sooner, lol)

5 Big Marketing Mistakes Entrepreneurs Make on Social Media

1.  Using Facebook as an infomercial.

It’s like a bad sales pitch on a constant basis.  You need to understand that when you are putting up pitchy posts, there’s no value being added for your audience. It completely goes against the entire purpose and mission of Facebook, which is to connect with friends and family.  So, an easy way to correct that is to think about your target market and start putting up value-driven posts geared towards them and helping them to solve a pain or problem they have.

2.  Asking for a sale, either too much or not asking at all.

I’m going to give you some examples for this.  I have several clients who say, “I’m not generating leads,” or “I’m not building my email list,” or “I’m not really making any sales.” Sound familiar?

However, when I go and review their profile and/or their fan page, I find that they’re not actually asking for the sales.  They put up value-driven posts, which are great, but they don’t include a call-to-action for their audience.  Without this option, there is nothing that allows people to really dive deeper into the content being shared.  

What I want you to understand is this: You can’t assume that someone knows the next step that you want them to take.  So, you definitely want to have that call-to-action in your posts.  However, you don’t want to be continuously hammering sales and promotions on a constant basis either. 

I don’t know if you have read or heard of the book by Gary Vaynerchuck called “JAB, JAB, JAB, RIGHT HOOK.”  It is like golden nuggets of information all up in that book!  lol  

In a nutshell, jabs are your value-driven posts.  So you want to give value, give value, give value and ask for the sale (right hook).  

3.  Not putting yourself in the shoes of your prospects or target market.

You have to realize that your consumers are constantly asking, “What’s in it for me? What’s the benefit? How is this going to help me?”  All too often, we don’t put ourselves in the shoes of our prospects, and we make it all about ourselves, right?

Here’s the thing:  Nobody cares about your goals and nobody cares about you rank advancing (promoting).  I say this all the time, and I’ll continue to say it (because it needs to be said); When it comes to social media, especially Facebook, social media is social.   

So when thinking about creating content to share, you have to think about how to entertain, educate and inspire.  Therefore, when you’re putting up a post, ask yourself, “Is this post going to be entertaining, educating or inspiring to my audience?” Then, start putting yourself in the place of your prospects and start thinking like you are a prospect.  

Think to yourself, “Is this going to benefit my audience and is this going to be valuable to them?” If it’s not, I wouldn’t recommend sharing that information.  If you want help with this, be sure to check out my Back to the Basics Academy, which is all about marketing and branding on social media, as well as setting up and growing your fan page.

4.  Inconsistency.

You cannot expect to sit here and grow a thriving business if you’re only sharing a couple of posts every now and then (or when you’re in the mood).  Think about how often people are online searching for solutions to their problems.  All the time, right?  Now, I’m not saying you need to be posting ten times a day, but it does need to be daily.  And, you need to be posting value-driven content. 

What happens if you aren’t consistent?  One of two things can happen, and I learned this from Ray Higdon:  

1)  People will forget about you, or

2) If you’re not providing valuable information to them to solve their problems, they’re going to go find somebody else who will.  So don’t lose them; just be consistent.  

5. Not Engaging with your followers.

When you put up a post, and people are commenting, don’t just be like, “Wahoo! I got a comment.” Instead, go and engage with them. Again, this is social media.  Go be social!

I have videos that I posted months ago that still get comments. I definitely make it a point, a few times a day, to go in and respond to those comments and engage.  My followers need to know that I appreciate them being there, especially those who are taking time to watch my video(s).  I am thankful for my followers, so I go back and engage with them by welcoming them, thanking them, and answering their questions, etc. 

Now obviously if you have a large following, you may not be able to do this but this is a big advantage to growing your audience in early stages!

All too often, people aren’t doing that, and that’s a big mistake. Engaging absolutely helps you build rapport with people because it makes them feel special. They will feel like they’re not just a number or a follower to you but someone you care about them, and that’s important.

It’s like that quote: “People may forget what you say, but they’ll always remember how you made them feel.”
