4 Marketing Mistakes To Avoid On Social Media

Do you ever feel like you are just not getting the results that others are getting on Facebook or other social sites?

I used to feel the exact same way which is why today I wanted to share four marketing mistakes to avoid on social media.  Trust me, I’ve made them all in the past.

4 Marketing Mistakes To Avoid On Social Media

#1 Mistake – Having the wrong expectations.

The number one big mistake to avoid is having the wrong expectations. I understand that a lot of people just want quick results. Are you one of them? I get it; I totally get it but understand that when it comes to social media and online marketing, it is not fast. It is a long-term strategy and it takes time.

There’s going to be times when you are working and you are posting and there’s nobody there. It’s like ghost town and tumbleweeds flying across your fan page but you just have to stick with it. Always think long term!  This is something I learned from Ray Higdon that I would always tell myself when I felt a little discouraged.  “Think Long Term, Trust in the journey, Keep going”

#2 Mistake – Not being consistent.

This is a big mistake that I want you to avoid. Really understand that you cannot expect to build an audience (especially an engaged audience) if you are hit or miss.

You have to post every single day. Think about the pains and problems of those in your target market and serve your audience daily.  Now, that doesn’t mean that you have to post 10 times a day but posting 2-5 times is a great rule of thumb.  However, don’t post for the sake of posting!  If it’s not entertaining, educating, or inspiring, don’t waste your time.

#3 Mistake – Focusing on too many things at a time.

The number three mistake is to stop focusing on so many things at once. OMG, I was all over this mistake at one point because I had major shiny object syndrome.  Can you relate?  However, to avoid overwhelm and actually get results, focus on one thing at a time and slowly build from there. You’re only one person and you cannot do everything.

If you’re just starting out, there are steps to take.  Write out your vision, understand your brand, identify your target market, know what to post and how your social media platform of choice works, have a DMO (daily method of operation), then move on to getting an offer created for your target audience, get your branded website up, etc.. This is exactly what we teach in Total Marketing Immersion.  Everything is done in steps to reduce overwhelm and keep you focused on one thing at a time.

If you want to have a presence on multiple platforms, then consider hiring assistants and train them to start doing some of those posts.

In the meantime, I highly recommend that you learn one social media platform and you do not move to another one until you are generating daily leads.

#4 Mistake – You don’t give people a chance to dive deeper (no CTA).

I see a lot of people who are posting on social media but they’re not giving people a chance to dive deeper and yet they wonder why they aren’t generating any leads.

There should be a minimum of three times a week that you need to be leading people to dive deeper through a call to action. Whether that be sending them to a free training, or sending them to fill out an application to do a free consultation with you, etc.

You can’t assume that people know what you want them to do next so tell them! 🙂

Big bonus tip – Focus on quality over quantity.

Now, I am going to give you a big bonus tip when it comes to marketing on social media and that is to really focus on quality over quantity.

So, don’t just throw up posts on social media just to throw them up. Be sure that they are quality posts that are educating, entertaining or inspiring to your audience.

  1. Consistency RULES the land in all avenues of our marketing and building of our business. On point as always sister Sherri!!!

  2. Great post! Thanks for sharing Sherri! Being consistent is key, so many people start out hot and then fizzle away with time and lack of results. And I think that can also fall into #3 where they focus on too many things at once as well. NUGGETS!!

  3. Yes, “Realistic Expectation” is a big one. Some people seem to think because it’s an online business, you can make a fortune very quickly. It’s like any business, you tend to struggle early on, but learn as you go. Great post Sherri.
